Brandon Bass Agrees With Orlando

Brandon Bass should be Orlando's starting PF next season.
The Orlando Magic finally got a PF they were chasing. David Aldridge is reporting that Bass agreed to a four-year, $18 million contract with the Magic. He has an out clause after three seasons. Bass, 23, averaged 8.5 PPG and 4.5 RPG in just 19 minutes per game while appearing in 81 games for Dallas last season. Bass is an excellent pickup for the Magic as you can see here. He is a younger player, which will keep balance with the Magic. Rashard Lewis and Vince Carter are older players and now Bass joins younger players Dwight Howard, Jameer Nelson, and Ryan Anderson, making up Orlando’s future. Bass chose the Magic over the Detroit Pistons and Portland Trail Blazers. The Dallas Mavericks no longer appeared to be interested after their acquisition of Shawn Marion yesterday.
The Magic made their first acquisition since the deal that netted them Vince Carter and Ryan Anderson. Bass should fill out a Magic starting lineup that will look like this:
C Dwight Howard 6-11
PF Brandon Bass 6-8
SF Rashard Lewis 6-10
SG Vince Carter 6-6
PG Jameer Nelson 6-0

Matt Barnes would be an excellent pickup.
This should be a much bigger and tougher team. Their scoring might fall a little bit, but their defense and rebounding should improve greatly. The Magic currently have a backup core of Ryan Anderson, Anthony Johnson, Mickael Pietrus, and JJ Redick. Although all of these players have shown to be decent NBA players and Pietrus has proved to be one of the best 6th men in the entire league, the Magic must make some more moves to fill out their roster. None of the players outside of Pietrus really seem to stand out. As reported earlier this week, Fran Vazquez will probably not be one of the players that fills out the roster. Assuming that one or two of these players come from the Magic summer league, the Magic still could use another big man and a swing man.
Theo Ratliff is an interesting name. He has given Dwight Howard fits in the past, especially in the 2008 playoffs with Detroit. He played pretty well at times against Orlando in the playoffs this season with Philadelphia as well. He scored just 1.9 PPG and 2.8 RPG in 46 games for the 76ers. He only played 12.6 MPG. He played 15.7 MPG against the Magic in the 1st round and wound up averaging 3.3 PPG and 3.8 RPG. He wouldn’t be able to give the Magic a lot of minutes, but he’s tough and he’s a veteran leader. The 36 year old still plays pretty good defense and could give Orlando about 10-15 minutes a game.
Matt Barnes appears to be on the Magic’s radar. And if he’s not, he should be. His three point shooting and defense would fit in perfectly with the Magic. He’d be a great player off of the bench.
Another option the Magic have is Marcin Gortat. He signed his offer sheet with Dallas, but as reported yesterday, Otis Smith is considering matching the offer.

+1 for the B. Bass move. He should be good for 15-18 mpg and will develop as a better rebounder and shot blocker practicing against Dwight everyday. If the Magic can re-sign The Polish Hammer rather than pursue T. Ratliff the season looks very bright. Orlando knows where they stand with Gortat and knows what he can bring off the bench. Give credit to Otis, he is doing a fine job of not panicking and is using the trade exemption as an ace in the hole for a move during the season.

July 10th, 2009 at 3:52 pmI’d like that Otis, but you can’t trade the trade exemption with a player.
