Orlando Magic News & Notes

Vince Carter during his media session.
As most of you, today was media day for the Orlando Magic. It was a blast and I got a lot of good comments from the players. I’ll have the audio of all of those interviews and conversations up throughout the week. I also took nearly 100 pictures. After I get a good look at all of them, I’ll post them for all of you to see.
The biggest thing that I took from media day is that everybody is team first. Nobody talked about individual stats at all. Brandon Bass answered each question about his individual goals with “championship,” while Mickael Pietrus knows that he could start but would prefer to come off of the bench because he thinks that he will better serve the team that way.
The Magic made a very good move today, picking up the options on both Head Coach Stan Van Gundy and General Manager Otis Smith. Van Gundy will be with the Magic through at least the 2010-11 season while Smith will remain in his position through 2011-12. Brian Schmitz has the full story here.
Schmitz also had a good story about Jameer Nelson getting back into a normal routine in today’s Sentinel. You can find that here.
Running a hand over his head and smiling, he said, “It’s time to get serious and back to work.” He also wants to resemble the point guard everyone recognizes.
And, metaphorically speaking, that really is the question, isn’t it?
Is Jameer Nelson back to being his old self?
“I feel good — normal now,” he said. “I worked harder this summer than I did any summer ever because I had to. I wanted to get back to the level I was at. I didn’t want to become just one of the guys.”
Nelson also admits that he was nowhere near 100% during the NBA Finals.
