Orlando Magic News & Notes: AJ’s Birthday, Howard’s Free Throw Shooting & More

Happy Birthday to Magic Point Guard Anthony Johnson, who turns 35 today. Johnson thought his 35-year-old legs can still get up a little bit when I asked him if we were going to see some more dunks this year.
(Laughs) A little bit. I felt pretty good this summer. I dunked a few times this summer so I feel like there are a couple more dunks left in the tank so hopefully I’ll be able to pull them out this year.
We’ll celebrate AJ’s birthday by re-living his dunk over 76ers big man Theo Ratliff in game one of the first round series between Orlando and Philadelphia last year.

Dwight Howard posted an interesting blog about his experience with the Basketball Without Boarders Program. Howard traveled to South African and called it a “life-changing experience.”

Tania Ganguli has several NBA stories linked here.
Ganguli also discusses Howard’s improved free throw shooting.
Magic assistant coach Patrick Ewing bounced the ball back to Howard, who shot again, and made it. Then he made another one, and another one. As his teammates filed out of the gym after day two of training camp, Howard kept making free throws and Ewing kept counting.
“Eighteen,” Ewing said, then passed the ball back. “Nineteen.”
He went all the way up to 28 before Howard missed again. As the ball clanked off the rim, Howard half grimaced, half smiled, in mild, but good-natured frustration. Twenty-eight straight made free throws isn’t bad, after all.

Having Dwight Howard increase his free throw shooting by 10% would do wonders for his confidence in his shot and would certainly make him a more dangerous player and would give him even more easy looks in the paint.
