Brian Schmitz discusses how a conversation with his former college coach, Mike Krzyzewski, helped J.J. have a big day Sunday in Toronto.

Redick has been betrayed by his trademark jumper for three-plus years. He played like he did in college, hitting five of the Magic’s 17 3-pointers (in 32 attempts) to shock the Raptors.

“Coach K called me after the New Jersey game and said, ‘You’re real close. It’s right there. You’re going to have one of your good games,’” Redick said, adding, “I didn’t know it would be this soon.”

Redick also played just over 44 minutes, easily a career high. “Obviously, it will be different when Vince comes back,” he said. “I’d like to have some consistency; I didn’t have that my first two years.

The Orlando Magic are now #2 in Marc Stein’s Power Rankings.

Can a team make a statement with a road win at Toronto in the third game of the season? If so, this is what Orlando announced Sunday with Rashard, Vinsanity and Pietrus all missing: Deepest Team in the League!

The Magic don’t care about how many All-Stars they have, they care about playing together like an All-Star team.

“I think we can build something and hopefully at the end of the year we can say that we’re about as good as an All-Star team,” said Vince Carter recently.

Rajon Rondo has re-signed with the Boston Celtics for $55 over five years. How smart does Magic General Manager Otis Smith look now? Just a year ago, he re-signed All-Star Point Guard Jameer Nelson for five years but is only paying him about $35 million.

  1. Brian says:

I think we can all agree that Mr. Otis Smith is VERY smart.

  2. There were so many questions about him as recently as last year and now he’s regarded as one of the best in the business.

  3. Brian says:

The moves he has been able to make, even after signing Rashard, have been nothing short of brilliant.

Then again, without an owner willing to shell out the $, he may not have been able to do any of it.

His smartest move yet, in my estimation, was letting Hedo go. That was a textbook example of getting the most out of a player and letting him walk right before the decline.

  4. I totally agree. He got a better player (Carter) and a whole lot of depth (Anderson, Bass, Barnes) because he let Hedo walk too.
