Orlando Magic News & Notes: Magic Bounce Back

Posted by: Andrew Melnick

Suns Magic Basketball

See my recap of Orlando’s 122-100 win over the Suns Wednesday night here.

Brian Schmitz of the Orlando Sentinel reports that Vince Carter is unlikely to play against Detroit tomorrow night.

“We probably shouldn’t have played him in Detroit, but Vince said he wanted to go,” Van Gundy said.”We’d probably would have been better off sitting him.”

There will be no controversy. When Rashard Lewis returns, he will start says Magic Head Coach Stan Van Gundy.

“I’m starting him the first game — for who, I don’t know,” Van Gundy said. “It’s like when we got Rafer (Alston) at midseason last year. When you know a guy is going to be there long term, you don’t mess around.”

No surprise there. It’s what Van Gundy should do. Click here to read the full story.

Last night, Head Coach Stan Van Gundy discussed how he thinks the NBA officials hold Magic Center Dwight Howard to a double standard.

“He gets penalized for being so strong. We give guys an advantage in this league for being quick, but we penalize them for being strong like Dwight,” Van Gundy said after Howard finished with 11 fouls in the last two games combined. “If you hit a perimeter guy on a drive the way they are allowed to hit Dwight all the time around the basket, it would be a flagrant foul.”

Tim Povtak has the story here.

Matt Barnes is a little bitter about this off-season and the lack of interest he received from the Suns.

“It’s frustrating, very frustrating,” Barnes said. “Everybody’s talking about this team being old and doesn’t have it. It’s the same team we had last year, and now they lead the league in scoring, shooting and 3-point percentage. That’s what I thought I was going into.”

Luckily, Matt is happy with the Magic. The Arizona Republic has the story here.

Ball Don’t Lie takes a look at several of last night’s games, including Orlando’s victory over the Suns when they go inside the box score here.

I’d really like to see Ryan Anderson stay in the starting lineup. I think he defnitely deserves it, plus he is young and should continue to develop and improve his defense. Giving him the starting spot will help develop his game. The only problem is his game, size, and style of play is extremely similar to Rashard Lewis. Do we want two of those guys out on the court at the same time? I’d like to see Pietrus come of the bench as our 6th man, perhaps Stan will eventually put Rashard at SF. I’d like to see how this works and what type of matchup problems they can create on offense. I don’t think they could have done a better job building a starting team with the best center in the league surrounded by 4 35%+ 3 point shooters. The one thing I still cannot understand is how we can still shoot so poorly vs detroit when we have so many good players. You would think there would be at least 1 person to step up, but everyone seemed to be off their game.
