Vince Carter Is And Always Has Been Clutch (Video)

Orlando Magic at Cleveland Cavaliers

Bill Simmons recently released his playoff preview and wrote that the Magic would not be able to defeat the Cleveland Cavaliers because they will turn to Vince Carter to make plays down the stretch.

I am a pessimist. At least when Vince is involved. Even though he’s playing for his most talented team ever, I can prove he will destroy them in the end. Why? Because he’s Vince Carter. Did you miss the past 12 years or something? Why do you think Orlando got him for 20 cents on the dollar? Why do you think Toronto fans still jeer him lustily even though he left six years ago? Why do you think Kidd pushed for a trade to Dallas? Orlando fans, remember we had this conversation when there’s a big playoff game in a few weeks and Vince is rolling around on the floor like he’s been shot as you’re screaming, “Get up! GET UP, VINCE! HE BARELY FOULED YOU! IT’S GAME 7! GET THE EFF UP!!!!!!!!!!!!”

You can read his full preview here.

Believing that Vince Carter is not clutch the most common misconception since, well, the media and fans said Carter was injury prone (Carter has not missed more than nine games since the 2002-03 season.

Sure Carter had an awful January, but he’s been excellent since then.

Let’s go back and use video evidence via youtube to prove this theory wrong.

If that’s a little old, here’s a game-winner against the Hawks just last season.

Carter’s proven he can do it in the postseason too.

And this year, Carter has come up with several big plays (whether its hitting shots or finding open teammates for open shots). Just take a look at his fourth quarter performance in Orlando’s come-back victory over Cleveland earlier this season. He scored some big points in the quarter, but his biggest play might have been his drive to the basket and pass to Rashard Lewis for an open, game-clinching three-pointer.

I think you're absolutely right Brian.

You missed the best game winner of all. He hits an impossible 3 to tie the game, then has the most cold-blooded, nasty game winner ever. Best of all? He's in an arena filled with canadians that hate his guts. You want to know why they boo him all game to this very day? This is why:

It's practically impossible to understand the chart Simmons posted re: clutch performances, but if I'm reading it correctly, his choice for closer (Hedo) shot much worse in the "clutch" (in 2009) than VC has done this year.

And Jameer Nelson has slipped? Yeah, he was recovering for much of the season, but his play over the last couple months has been stellar.

Simmons obviously doesn't pretend to be impartial, but he often lets his "jokes" get in the way of any type of meaningful analysis whatsoever.
