Recapping J.J. Redick’s Media Availability

J.J. Redick, who just returned from his honeymoon with his new wife Chelsea, was made available to the media Monday afternoon. Redick, who signed an offer sheet with the Chicago Bulls worth $19 million over 3 years had his offer matched by the Orlando Magic Friday and will reprise his role as the backup shooting guard. Although Redick was excited about his potential opportunity to start for what should be a very good Bulls team, he is happy to be back with Orlando and has no qualms with coming off the bench. After signing Chris Duhon and Quentin Richardson to multi-year contracts, filling their need for a younger backup point guard and a wing to replace Matt Barnes, and matching the offer sheet the Chicago Bulls signed restricted free agent shooting guard J.J. Redick too, the Magic have nearly completed their offseason. Orlando Magic News & Notes Redick Stays, Barnes’ Decision

Brian Schmitz of the Orlando Sentinel says Orlando’s decision to match Chicago’s offer for J.J. Redick goes beyond money. Magic General Manager Otis Smith admitted the Bulls’ offer was higher than expected and added, “When you figure in the tax, it is a big number to chew off over the life [of the contract].” But along with talent, Smith saw intangibles in Redick that outweighed financial implications. “When it came down to it, when we’re talking about what we’re trying to do here, it came down for me to pedigree, DNA, things that most people don’t think about,” Smith said. It’s Official: Magic Retain J.J. Redick

Here is the official word from the Magic: MAGIC RETAIN J.J. REDICK Orlando, FL – The Orlando Magic have exercised its right of first refusal and retained restricted free agent guard J.J. Redick, General Manager Otis Smith announced today.  Per team policy, terms of the deal are not disclosed.  Orlando had seven days to match an offer sheet made to Redick by Chicago on July 9. “J.J. Magic Will Match Bulls’ Offer For J.J. Redick

This afternoon, the Magic sent out an e-mail informing the media Magic General Manager Otis Smith would be available tomorrow morning. This can only lead us to believe Orlando will be matching the offer sheet J.J. Redick signed with the Chicago Bulls. Earlier this evening, Tim Povtak of NBA Fanhouse reported the Magic would be keeping Redick. Brian Schmitz of the Orlando Sentinel is now reporting the same thing.
