Jameer Nelson is more confident than ever – for good reason. Now in his seventh year with the Magic, Nelson said he’s comfortable calling out a teammate when need be or directing traffic on the court or in the locker room. He’s learned that different sort of leadership is needed for different players. But he knows now that he’s earned the respect of his teammates because of his fearlessness out on the court. “I think I’ve shown that over the last two years that I want to be more of a leader and take more of a role as a [...]

Alex Kennedy of Hoops World had an interesting story today, claiming Vince Carter and Dwight Howard were not on the same page last season. As the two players adjusted to each other’s games, their roles started to blend and it became clear that something had to change as the season went on. “It was kind of like, ‘Okay, okay, who is going to do it.’ We were kind of bumping heads. Well, not really bumping heads, those aren’t the words I want to use. But you kind of go through the game like, ‘Alright, it’s his team.’ But at the [...]

The Magic kicked off training camp Tuesday morning. They spent the evening session working on defense. The Orlando Magic wrapped up their first day of training camp with a two-hour practice on Tuesday evening. They spent the majority of practice focusing on defense — drill work, team rotations and various other factors of “team defense,” Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said. The last portion of practice was spent shooting and weightlifting, with the players working on their own or in small groups. Zach McCann of the Orlando Sentinel has that story here. Orlando Magic Media Day: Stan Van Gundy
Stan Van Gundy appeared a little more relaxed than usual and seemed ready to get the season underway. I figured Van Gundy would be a little on edge when he was inevitably berated with questions about the Miami Heat, but he was not. Van Gundy said he didn’t do much talking during Orlando’s lengthy preseason meeting Monday morning but was pleased with the meeting and pleased with how hard the team has worked this offseason. After the jump, you can read more from Van Gundy.
Orlando Magic Media Day: J.J. Redick
Magic Guard J.J. Redick thought he was heading to Chicago earlier this summer when he signed a three-year deal worth $19 million with the Bulls. The Magic chose to match the offer and retain Redick. Redick spoke on that subject and much more at media day Monday afternoon. Redick called Orlando’s pre-media day meeting “productive.” Redick told reporters there were several themes and specifically mentioned “accountability” and “toughness.” “I think accountability is one of the main things we talked about for sure,” Redick said. “I think one of the main reasons we had the meeting was so everyone understands their [...]
Orlando Magic Media Day: Quentin Richardson
Veteran wing Quentin Richardson took part in his first media day as a member of the Orlando Magic and like most Magic players, he was asked several questions about the Miami Heat. Of course, it made sense to ask Richardson these questions considering he played for the Heat a season ago. Richardson said the Heat “put themselves in a pretty good position,” but quickly added to his statement – “With that being said, we feel like we have a very good team and where in a pretty good position.” Richardson didn’t have any “secrets” to share about his time in [...]
